Overview of PACOS

Programs and Courses Outcomes System (PACOS) is a free, open source web-based system. It was created by Prof. Rossiter at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to be used by a University as a centralized web system for people to create, access and edit the program information, course information and the relationship between them. Although it was developed based on the need of HKUST, with some minor changes (mainly concerning the user authentication) it should work in any institution.

After it is set up, users log in to the system using their institution login details. Depending on the power level given to the user, they can then add/delete/edit courses and the corresponding course information, and can add/delete/edit program outcomes. A summary matrix showing the mapping of courses to program outcomes is shown, and, if desired, the user can download an Excel format file containing the mapping data, get an email sent to them with a copy of the matrix in HTML form, or generate a configurable graph summarising the information.

Every user has an assigned power level. In a typical installation of an institution with 40 programs, the majority of users (possibly instructors) have power level 2 (can view everything and edit course information), perhaps only 20 users (possibly the program director) have power level 3 (can edit program information as well as course information), and a few person is administrator (has the power to do anything, including adding/deleting user accounts).
